Elements of Art
The elements of art are the building blocks used by artists to create a work of art.
Line - referring to a continuous mark, made on a surface, by a moving point.
This picture shows Line in today's element of art because it's a drainage with continuous lines going horizontally. The lines all face the same way as well, which are opposite of the audience.
Shape - an enclosed space that can be both geometric and organic.
This picture is today's Element of Art for shape because it shows the shape of grids above the grass that is in the foreground of the picture.
Form - three dimensional figures, or figures with the illusion of being three dimensional
This picture shows today's Element of art for form because it is a three dimensional shape, it is actually a sphere with a more oval shape to it.
Space- the area between and around objects. The space around objects is of-ten called negative space; negative space has shape. Space can also refer to the feeling of depth. Real space is three-dimensional; in visual art, when we create the feeling or illusion of depth, we call it space.
This picture shows today's element of art for space because the focus on the picture is more towards the right rather than the middle and shows the big space behind my subject and how wide it is.
Texture - how a surface of something feels or looks. It is the surface quality or "feel" of an object, its smoothness, roughness, softness, etc.
This picture shows today's element of art for texture because the focus of the picture is on the hand in general, and the texture could be the hands, but they could be focused more on the beads on the nails which show how bumpy they are in real life.
Color - the light reflected off of objects. Color has three main characteristics: hue(the name of the color, such as red, green, blue, etc.), value (how light or dark it is), and intensity (how bright or dull it is).
This picture shows today's element of art for color because the lamp has different glass colors to it that when the light reflects through it we are illuminated with lamp with a variety of colors to it.
Value- refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. It defines how light or dark a given color or hue can be. Values are best understood when visualized as a scale or gradient, from dark to light.
This picture shows today's Element of Art for Value because it has the reflection of each color of light in the water which shows the different hues of the colors from the light in the water reflection.
